The location for Fancy Dress has changed several times throughout the history of the event. The old gynmasiam that preceded Doremus we see today burned downed, so they had to switch locations. Further, they had to move to another recreational gynasium that now is called the Pavillion, since Doremus has been under construction for the past 2 years (2019-2020). Fancy Dress has seen a number of location changes for reasons such as these. As the student body grew, the event was in need of bigger and bigger venues. There are even accounts of Fancy Dress being in Evans Dining Hall for a period of time.
Ryan Hodgson '18 on Alumni Fancy Dress
Fancy Dress is an event that is trancendant beyong just college years at Washington and Lee. Alumni Fancy Dress has been celebrated in New York City and Washington D.C. for many years and more recently in Richmond since the early 2000s. In 2019, they began hosting an Alumni Fancy Dress in both Austin, Texas and Nashville, Tennessee. This has been a major success of the past years and alumni from the area congregate to celebrate their college years at Washington and Lee University. Fancy Dress was such an unique experience that the alumni could not limit it to only four year. As the alumni base grows, the locations for this event broaden. This has allowed more alumni to attend the event, as it has helped limit the need for long travel in their busy lives.
