1981

Theme, Decorations, and Attire

Moving into 1981, this Fancy Dress occurred on the weekend of February 26th. The 1981 Ring-tum Phi article featured below discusses the details of this year's event. Attendees were again dressed in the expected black-tie attire, with women wearing elegant dresses and men in tuxedos. The theme for this year was “On Broadway,” with the venue decorated in tribute to Broadway's most famous productions, such as West Side Story. Because of this theatrical theme, the SAB co-chairman, Jamie Small, claimed there would be more entertainment than ever. SAB was given $35,000 for the execution of the event, which contributed to the extravagant nature of the event. Peter Duchin and his Orchestra performed, and students enjoyed dancing to their swing-style music. Tickets for the event cost $20.

Student Involvement

Like the previous year, the planning and execution of the event was overseen by the SAB. Men were still fully in charge of this year’s Fancy Dress.

Student Reaction

This year’s Fancy Dress was described as the "best ball ever" in the 1981 Ring-tum Phi article featured to the left. There were no controversies surrounding the event this year, likely due to the simple theme.
