This collection was collected with pieces in various languages and translated into Latin as a means to spread the material in the collection across the world in a language everyone could understand. Original languages include Spanish, French, Italian, and German. The cordiform map illustrated by Oronce Finé featured in the book is the first map drawn with lines for longitude and latitude and the expertise shown in the design offer viewers a clear picture of the globe. The contrast between the highly advanced map and its artistically designed border provide a look into the past as those designs were very popular. Around the edges, there are illustrations of pigmies, mermaids, dragons, and floral designs that fill the could-be empty space around the heart shaped map. See p. 70 for the map itself. Another impressive aspect to this historical piece is the fact that the book’s binding is original. For nearly 500 years the same binding has held this collection together. The spine is delicately painted with gold designs and crafted beautifully. Some extra things to note include how the writing from the featured explorers were written as “letters” but held an understanding that they would be released to the public. Because of this, the letters are formatted with increased formality and likely stretch the truth as many accounts from early colonialists often do. The book itself, given its pristine condition and importance to history would likely be worth a substantial amount of money, but remains comfortably in Leyburn’s Special Collections as a donation from W. W. Corcoran.
