“The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico” (1942) are a pair of facsimiles that are translated copies of a limited edition print of the original text written by Bernal Diaz de Castillo. Bernal Diaz de Castillo (1492-1584) was a Spanish Conquistador who chronicled his experience on the conquest of Mexico. Our two copies of the text are #806 and #297 in a series published by The Limited Editions Club. Each copy has a unique binding and cover; one copy has a binding and cover made of animal skin, with an illustration on the cover of a scene of the conquest, the other copy has a more conventional hardback cover that has a brown pattern on it. Both are signed by the illustrator and publisher. The copy made of animal skin was donated by Frederic Farrar, who is a member of the class of ’41, and has an inscription made out to John McKeen in the beginning of the piece. The other piece has a card showing the acquisition of the W&L library. These editions contain illustrations and maps drawn by Miguel Covarrubias which are drawn with respect to the Mexican codices. These were meant show the role played by the indigenous people and their culture in the conquest. Both books have a preface and an itinerary of Bernal Diaz de Castillo’s time in the conquest. These show that this work of literature should be investigated as an academic work that can teach us about the history of the conquest of Mexico. Thus, these pieces are very valuable because of the important contents about the history of the conquest, they’re limited edition and signed by the collaborators, and ultimately are made with high quality materials and are still in very good condition.
