en Hispania sive de regis hispanae regnis et opibus commentaries is a first edition artifact that comments on the various kingdoms of Spain and the wealth of the king of Spain in 1629. The book is missing its back cover and is completely split in half, straight down the spine. The front cover and title page are not attached, and the cover itself is flakely and beat up, indicating a large amount of use in the past. The various kingdoms include: Portugal, Castilla-Leon, Aragon, Navarra, Granada, Toledo, Valencia, Galicia and Murcia. Copper engraved coat of arms for each kingdom are presented on the title page, indicating the premises of the book. The title page is the most illustrated page out of the 520 pages, the rest are reported comments about these kingdoms and Philip IV (King of Spain from 1621-1665). The book itself is approximately the size of a hand, making it reasonably easy to travel with. That being said, it was published by the House of Elzevir which is a publishing house that printed smaller sized books in order to make them more affordable, creating a larger audience to purchase them and have access. The House of Elzevir left two copper engraved symbols at the back of the book, incorporated into the index. This specific book also has “D4” written on the inside cover, indicating that it once resided in the library of someone’s house. Considering the topic of the book is commentary on the kingdoms and wealth of Spain and Philip IV, it can be assumed that the person who owned the book was a noble who could afford a library and was literate. The author, Joannes D Laet, also included a dedication to D. Edvardo Powello, a british knight, on the first page of the book revealing the author’s need of a sponsor behind the creation and publishment of the book. Overall, the book is relatively rare, being first edition, and is fascinating in its size and format. The university is uncertain as to how the book was acquired.
