EN This book and the monument that it memorializes, the Maine Plaza, is a homage to the victims of the USS Maine battleship that exploded in the Havana harbor on February 15, 1898. The memorial book was published in English and Spanish in parallel columns so that the readers could choose which language they wished to use. Twenty thousand copies of the book were published to be given to the American Veterans of the Spanish American War during the inauguration of the Maine Plaza at Habana. This book seems to be almost an event program that corresponds with the men’s visit to Cuba. Specifically, the book comments that “This book being published with the special object that it shall serve as a special memento for the American Veterans of the Spanish-American War of their visit to Cuba in October 1928,” (pg.8). Throughout the book, there are hundreds of black and white images, illustrations, and engravings. For example, a monument dedicated to Teddy Roosevelt in the city of Santiago de Cuba (see pg. 137). There is also a page containing images of the president and his cabinet, which shows the government’s support of this work and its message.

At the end of the book, there is an appendix containing the names of the Americans who aided in the freedom of Cuba from Spain. As such, this memorial book is a symbol of friendship and union between the United States and Cuba. One section in the book is even titled “An Altar of Friendship,” (see page 131). In this section, a representative of the United States remarks “It is the altar of the firm and lasting friendship which joins Cuba to the United States. Here, our spirit of comradeship is renewed and restrengthened every year” (pg. 131).

ES Este libro y el monumento que conmemora, la Plaza del Maine, son homenajes a las víctimas del acorazado USS Maine que explotó en el puerto de La Habana el 15 de febrero de 1898. El libro conmemorativo era publicado en inglés y español en columnas paralelas para dar opciones a los lectores de cual lengua quieren leer. Se publicaron veinte mil copias del libro para dar a los Veteranos Americanos de la Guerra Hispanoamericana durante la inauguración de La Plaza Maine en La Habana. Este libro es casi un programa de eventos que corresponde con la visita de los veteranos a Cuba. Específicamente, el libro comenta, “Publicado este libro con el objeto especial de que sirva a los veteranos norteamericanos de la guerra entre la Unión y España de grato recuerdo de su visita a Cuba en octubre de 1928,” (pg. 8). En el libro, hay cientos imágenes, ilustraciones, y grabados en blanco y negro. Por ejemplo, un monumento dedicado a Teddy Roosevelt en la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba (véase pg. 137). Además, hay una página con imágenes del presidente y su gabinete, que muestra el apoyo del gobierno de este libro y su mensaje.

Al fin del libro, hay un apéndice con los nombres de los americanos que ayudaron en la libertad de Cuba de España. Por eso, este libro conmemorativo es un símbolo de amistad y unión entre los Estados Unidos y Cuba. Una sección en el libro se titula “Altar de Amistad” (véase pg. 131). En esta sección, un representante de los Estados Unidos comenta, “Es el altar de la amistad firme y duradera que une a Cuba con los Estados Unidos. Aquí, nuestro espíritu de camaradería se renueva y se fortaleció cada ano,” (pg. 132).
