Description

Have you ever wondered what book was the first to be published in the Philippines? If so, you are in luck because W&L Special Collections has the 1947 facsimile of the first book published in the Philippines. Doctrina Christiana – The First Book Printed in the Philippines Manila, 1593 is a compilation of Christian writings in Spanish and their translation to Tagalog, which was the main language in Manila. It is interesting because the book was created using engraved wooden blocks. The author, Miguel Juan de Plasencia, was a priest of the Franciscan Order. He arrived in the Philippines in 1578 with the first group of Franciscan missionaries. He wanted to spread the Spanish language and also Christianity. It is interesting because the only copy of the original that is left is in the Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection in the Library of Congress. However, the Library of Congress created a facsimile edition that was published in 1947. There were 2500 copies, and the Library of Congress gave one of the copies to W&L Special Collections. Although we do not have the original book, this facsimile is special because it allows us to examine the original book.
