P. Felipe Scio de S. Miguel, Obispo Electo de Segovia (1819) is an artifact translated from the VULGATE in Latin to Spanish by Felipe Scío de San Miguel. Felipe Scío de San Miguel was a biblical scholar translator and bishop of Segovia who was commissioned by Carlos III to translate the entire Bible into the vulgar language. He was also responsible for tutoring many Spanish princes and princesses, such as prince Fernando VII and Carlota Joaquina, who was a princess in Brazil and later became a queen consort of Portugal. This work represents the prominence of the Catholic faith in the lives many Spaniards. More specifically, it conveys the efforts of the Spanish government to spread the Catholic faith and increase its accessibility through translating the Bible into Spanish. Additionally, the American Bible society’s sponsorship of this version’s publication to the United States. In terms of appearance, this artifact is in relatively good condition for its age. This piece was donated to Washington and Lee by an alumnus, James McAleer, who happened to restore old books as a hobby, however there is no evidence of treatment to this artifact. The tree-calf skin binding contains a few oil stains from leather treatment, and it also has a slight wood-grain appearance to it, which is unique to tree-calf skin. We can infer by this piece’s strong binding that it was used in a mission school, as opposed to being an individual’s personal Bible.
