Behind the Scenes

Mock Convention is an entirely student run event on Washington and Lee’s campus. Students have the option to be as much or as little involved as they want. Some interview for big positions, such as co-chair, which is equivalent three credit course. Others enhance the event by covering it in the school newspapers. And others simply sign up to be a member of a delegation. Mock Con is truly the only university sponsored activity that has campus wide participation.

The more intensive positions are divided up among several committees including the General, Financial, Political, Operations, and Communications Departments. The departments have anywhere from two to 13 members. Further, the convention’s Steering Committee is made up of 20 students in these departments. This years’ convention was co-headed by Jimmy Fleck, the General Chair and John Harashinski, the Political Chair.

To articulate the ranging aspects of student involvement, we have included several items to this page including photographs of past student organizers, a mock up of the convention’s financial documents, predictions of the outcome, a Ring Tum Phi article about the event and a letter from a past student trying to drum up enthusiasm for the event from fraternities. These documents illustrate the level of responsibility required by students as well as the skill sets they gain from this experience.
